الشيخ عثمان بن فودي
Shehu Usman dan Fodio (1754–1817) was a prominent Fulani Islamic scholar, teacher, and reformer born in Gobir, in present-day northern Nigeria. He belonged to the Toronkawa clan of the Fulani people. Usman was deeply influenced by the Qadiriyya Sufi order and devoted his life to teaching, writing, and preaching reform in accordance with Islamic principles. In response to corruption, moral decline, and syncretic practices within the Hausa states, he initiated a religious and social reform movement that led to the Sokoto Jihad (1804–1808). His movement overthrew the rulers of Gobir and other Hausa states, establishing the Sokoto Caliphate — a federation of emirates governed by Islamic law. The Caliphate became a major center of learning, governance, and Islamic scholarship in West Africa. Sheikh Usman authored more than a hundred works in Arabic and Fulfulde covering theology, jurisprudence, Sufism, and governance. He passed away in 1817, leaving a profound legacy of scholarship, justice, and spiritual renewal.
