الشيخ عبد الله بن فودي
Sheikh Abdullahi bin Muhammad bin Uthman bin Musa Jakolo (1766–1829), popularly known as Abdullahi Fodiyo, Abdullahi Gwandu, or Mai Gwandu, was born in 1181 A.H. into a deeply learned and pious family. Under the guidance of his scholarly parents, he memorized the Holy Qur’an at a very early age. He later studied additional branches of Islamic knowledge and jurisprudence under his elder brother, Sheikh Uthman bin Fodiyo. Upon reaching maturity, he undertook the study of Hadith alongside his brother under the supervision of their uncle, Sheikh Muhammad Raji, in the year 1201 A.H. He acquired advanced knowledge of Usul al-Fiqh from another uncle, Sheikh Mustapha. Sheikh Abdullahi also mastered Arabic grammar to a remarkable degree, authoring several works in the field. He was widely known for his extraordinary memory, with accounts stating that he memorized the entirety of the Arabic dictionary. He became a towering authority in religious knowledge, particularly in Hadith and Qur’anic exegesis. During the period of the Sokoto Jihad, he remained constantly at the side of his brother, Sheikh Uthman bin Fodiyo.
